Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main focus of Breaking Chains?
Breaking Chains Honduras exists to serve and seek change for those affected by urban poverty in Tegucigalpa by meeting basic needs and developing human relationships that act as a gateway toward a relationship with Christ. Much of our year is focused on our street ministry that is purposed on helping the homeless and those living in poverty in the downtown area of the capital city. However, we also utilize summer mission teams to reach out to other areas and accomplish benevolence tasks that we do not have the manpower or resources to fulfill on a regular basis.
How old is Breaking Chains?
Breaking Chains is still a very young ministry. Amber Foster began Breaking Chains by serving meals out of her car to the homeless population in January 2009. The ministry then began renting a facility to use as its center in the summer of 2010. Check out more about the history of Breaking Chains here.
How many people does this ministry serve?
This is a tricky question to answer because while we serve a great number of people, not all of them come to every event that is offered each week. At any given time, there are between 20 to 50 people living temporarily to semi-permanently in our downtown facility. At each meal service, we serve approximately 30 to 50 people. For Sunday morning worship, we average about 20-40 children and 30-50 adults in attendance. Breaking Chains began a registry of those that we serve and as of September 2011, more than 275 people had been registered.
How much does it cost to bring a group to Honduras?
The main cost in bringing a group to Honduras is airfare. Tickets to Honduras typically run between $600 and $900 per ticket depending on the time of year they are purchased. Groups are housed on the campus of the Baxter Institute, a local seminary school, and lodging costs $12 per person per night not including food expenses. Apart from food and airfare, the cost of a trip is determined by the kind of activity a group wants to do. A full listing of costs including the cost of various service projects can be found here.
What does Breaking Chains need the most?
Breaking Chains is first and foremost always in need of prayer. We are also always in need of financial donations to fund our various projects, building and administrative costs. If you would like to give financially, please click here. Breaking Chains is also in need of several items throughout the year to better serve those who visit our ministry. These items include pain relievers and cold medicine, triple antibiotic ointment, gauze and bandages, toothbrushes and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products (excluding tampons), diapers (all sizes) and baby formula.
